How To Prepare Your Child For Distance Learning

It's 2021 and we are still in a Global Pandemic. Covid-19 is really a life-changer, and everyone is still adjusting to the new Stay-At-Home lifestyle, and the ones that are truly affected are our kids. How could they grow and learn in this kind of situation? Where's all the fun in staying at home and not having any friends to play with?

This is our second year in Distance Learning, but some of my "mom friends"-- specifically those with toddlers, are still having second thoughts with this Online Setup. We can't really blame them because they have their reasons, but I hope this helps...

Tips to prepare your child for Online Learning:

  1. Setup your child's study nook

Your child's study space is critical to his ability to learn and study effectively. Make sure to clear distractions (ex: toys and unnecessary gadgets, pets, and other people), and place all learning materials within reach. Also, advise your child to always keep his space tidy -- this could help your child improve his concentration.

2. Enroll him in an Online Tutorial during Summer Breaks

This made Joaquin's transition from the Traditional Class to an Online Setup easier. This helped him be confident and more interactive in front of the camera. You may choose a 1-on-1 tutorial or a class with a few students; we decided to choose the latter. Meeting new faces could be fun and challenging for our kids, too.

I enrolled Joaquin in Star Readers' Reading Enhancement Program, and I was amazed by their way of teaching. They apply the Montessori Method of Online teaching, and my son was really looking forward to every class. I decided to enroll him in Bright Star Montessori -- their other branch intended for Proper Schooling this coming school year.

3. Make time for your child

Be with your child on his first few weeks into Distance Learning, or if your schedule does not permit, assign a guardian who is familiar with the gadgets that your child will be using. The first few weeks are the hardest, especially when you're dealing with a toddler. Awkwardness and tantrums are normal at first, but eventually they'll get the hang of it. You'll find them enjoying and working independently along the way.

4. Let your child study independently

Guide your child along the way, but refrain from meddling during classes, activities, and home works. We all want the best for our kids, that's why we are always on their sides, but believe it or not, too much of our involvement in their studies can do more harm than good.

Let us have faith and believe in our child's capabilities. Let us allow them to work on their challenges, rather than doing things for them.

5. Praise your child

After your child has completed a task, don't forget to praise them. Let us let them know that we are proud of their achievements. This will help them be more motivated and encouraged.

It is also best to reward them sometimes to help maintain their motivation.

The first few weeks of Distance Learning will be a challenge, but don't lose hope! Just like us, our kids need time to get used to a new routine. Let's embrace this new "normal" and life must go on.💪
